A man posing as a high-ranking Customs officer has been arrested in a major fraud case that rocked Kanchrapara, West Bengal. Mihir Ghosh, the accused, allegedly deceived multiple victims with false promises of government jobs and cheap gold deals, amounting to a fraud worth several crores.
Ghosh had built a persona of authority, often seen moving around in an SUV fitted with a fake blue beacon, giving the impression of being an influential government officer. His behavior, flashy lifestyle, and frequent claims of "connections in Delhi" had long raised suspicions among the residents of Jonpur area in Kanchrapara.
Acting on a tip-off, local police raided his residence and seized a country-made pistol, fake identification documents, and the SUV used to intimidate and impress his victims. The investigation team also recovered paperwork linked to fake job offers and dubious gold deals.
Sources say Ghosh primarily targeted unemployed youth and middle-class families desperate for stable employment or investment opportunities. He would collect huge sums in exchange for promises of lucrative government posts or high-quality gold at throwaway prices, only to vanish later or continue stalling the victims.
Residents who had previously suspected foul play finally approached authorities when more people began speaking up about being duped. This led to the swift operation and Ghosh’s arrest. He has been remanded to police custody for further questioning and to trace his accomplices, if any.
The police have urged potential victims to come forward and report similar instances. Meanwhile, a deeper probe is underway to determine whether Mihir Ghosh was part of a larger fraud network operating in the region or acted independently.
